Hand hygiene protects you and those receiving the care you provide. The simple act of cleaning your hands can prevent the spread of germs, including those resistant to antibiotics. Keeping the hands & skin healthy and clean is a challenge that requires all healthcare personnel to be knowledgeable about how & when.

Did you wash your hands? Are you sure you washed your hands? You have heard those questions since you were a small child and could put your hands into a sink. And as adults, it is no less important. “Hand Hygiene” is a general term that applies to hand washing, antiseptic hand wash, antiseptic hand rub, or surgical hand antisepsis and is one of the most important topics in patient safety. This course will review the most recent guidelines and standards and provide vital information in patient safety through hand hygiene.

Objectives

Discuss prevalence of hospital related infections as transmitted on the hands of healthcare workers along with the Standard Precautions and its components.
Describe normal skin flora and its ability to rebound.
Review hand washing and use of alcohol-based rub protocols along with contrast and comparison of both.
Discuss prevalence of MRSA and relationship to hand hygiene use.
