Asthma - Condition and Management

Asthma is a chronic disease of the air passages characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways. This activity outlines the evaluation and treatment of asthma and explains the role of the interprofessional team in managing patients with this condition.

Description

This course is designed to review the asthma condition & management approaches in standard asthma care. The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) is the foundational information used in development of this course.  Comprehensive GINA documents are available on the internet; additional resources are noted in the reference.

Objectives

  1. Discuss the asthma condition including pathophysiology and typical symptoms.
  2. Identify common asthma triggers.
  3. Describe phenotypes of asthma.
  4. Compare and contrast asthma incidence by gender, race, and socioeconomic level.
  5. Identify comorbidities that may create symptoms that mimic asthma.
  6. List categories of medications used in treating asthma.
